recently, every damn time I go on this page, I can't even do more than one search in their search engine, without them having some form of captcha coming up... unless I type it into the search bar on the top of my browser next to where you put the url.

They have become aholes in this way. I recommend people use searx instances instead if they don't want to tear their hair out due to duckduckgo's anti-scrapper policies.

Unless you can get them to knock it off of course by complaining.

Doesn't do that to me. DDG is one of the best search engines for not giving me captchas. Wonder how we are different in that regard, there must be something different about the signal DDG gets from each of us? Brave search, on the other hand, has been very busy with the captchas.

I checked waterfox after and rather annoyingly I found out they are checking the web browser in some way.

Which sadly means, they will discriminate against niche web browsers...

wonderful... so they are bullying people to use modern web browsers... sigh.

Whoever came up with user agent sniffing should be arrested and whomever supports that idea should be too.

Are you still self-building Pale Moon? Just put it in "Native" compatibility mode for user agent in Tools - Preferences - Advanced. That's where I keep my builds of Libre Moon, seems to work great.

Yeah I had to, because palemoon's builds don't have sndio enabled by default. Which is a pain...

I may actually have to switch back to devuan though due to the absolute irritation of what's currently going on.

You see palemoon can't be built in hyperbola anymore since 34.3

Irritating indeed...

and I need that for audio and it won't let me play videos directly on invidio and some other sites anymore.

So... yeah.

I have reached my limit.

That's a tough deal, sorry about that. My use case for Hyperbola at this point would be for a distraction-free writing platform, maybe write some science fiction books on it or something. Trying to use it as a general-purpose platform for all internet browsing and games and so forth, without even having any browser as capable as Libre Moon - that would be really, really, really tough.

I still have high hopes for Hyperbola BSD though! Maybe we should work with the Pale Moon developers to try to find some kind of workaround for continuing to build Libre Moon on Hyperbola? What is the current roadblock that prevents building?

Recently, I had the captcha with DDG. It is not at all times and it was more frequent on my work laptop with losedows 11 using Firefox (it is my employer's laptop so they decide the OS and I have no say on that, but fortunately I still can install more or less any free software so I can use firefox, libreoffice, okular, emacs, cygwin and others).

I've never seen a duckduckgo captcha, didn't even know duckduckgo has captchas.

I've found that most searx instances no longer work.

>"I've found that most searx instances no longer work."

Some of them kind of work for me, but they have to be pointed at other search engines that don't have capchas or Cloudflare gatekeeping, or those search results don't seem to make it back to SearxNG. So I end up just using SearxNG as a proxy for search engines like DDG where I don't have to solve capchas. Which is fine, except I don't need a proxy for search engines like DDG - I can just use DDG directly. I don't have a big privacy concern about DDG.

What's wrong with captcha? I don't mind them if they keep the service up and running.

I just came across one on startpage; it was easy to solve by typing in the characters.

And what if the captcha is pure evil like recaptcha?

Googles...

Also, captchas tend to deanonymize the user even further.

If they aren't already revealed, now they will be even more obvious.
