Seeking chipsets that may be free software compatible... although probably aren't

Does anybody know if the Ralink RT5572 chipset depends on non-free firmware? I scanned the source code and there is a firmware file. I think what they are doing is embeeding it. It has a copyright statment attached that I think adds prohibitions that are unacceptable. I've heard of this although have never seen it.
